SunExpress has decided it no longer wants to be just a point-to-point airline. The German-Turkish carrier is preparing SunExpress Holidays, its own package holiday brand, aiming to compete head-to-head with major tour operators as reported by Hosteltur.

The move makes perfect sense. The German market is its backyard and Turkey its favorite destination. Instead of giving the hotel and transfer margin to an intermediary, SunExpress keeps it. This is what Jet2 and TUI already do with their integrated airlines: control the flight, control the trip.

My take? About time. More competition in the package holiday space means more pressure on classic aggregators margins and, for the traveler, more one-click options. If SunExpress gets the user experience right, other low-cost long-haul airlines could copy the model.
