Check24 accused of misleading advertising by German agencies
The German association of independent travel agencies (VUSR) has taken aim at Check24, the online comparison giant, over a campaign it considers misleading advertising. As Hosteltur reports, the complaint points to ads that allegedly mislead consumers, something agencies have been denouncing for a while.
This isn't the first time Check24 has been in the dock. Its comparison model, which brings in so many customers, has also caused friction with the traditional sector. And here the crux lies in the fine print or, better said, in how offers are presented.
In my view, the real issue isn't that Check24 compares, but how it does it. When a giant with its financial muscle plays with prices, the small agent feels it in their wallet. VUSR defends its members, but also the traveler, who ultimately needs to be sure what they're buying.
The ball is now in the court of the German authorities. We'll see if the VUSR complaint gains traction and if Check24 adjusts its messaging. Meanwhile, traditional German agencies, already coming off a tough year, need comparisons to be fair and transparent. They're not asking for privileges, just clear rules to compete.
