The wooden cards we mostly use today as access credentials can do a second, far more valuable job: become the object the guest takes home, engraved with the specific details of their trip.

The supplier's argument is straightforward. In adventure hotels, where guests come to do something (a route, a descent, a crossing), the card stops being a check-in formality and becomes the point of return. It gets engraved with the date, the itinerary or the programme name and is handed over as part of the experience. The guest does not return it, they keep it.

It grates on me when the industry treats the souvenir as a decorative detail. There is real business here. A durable, personalised, well-engraved wooden card costs barely more than a plastic one, withstands use and works as a physical reminder on the guest's shelf for years. For an adventure hotel, that is marketing you do not pay per impression. The question I would throw at any operations manager: does your current card generate a memory, or does it just open doors?
