Summary: 58% of travelers pick free cancellation even when it costs more. Booking anxiety rules the checkout and nonrefundable rates keep losing.

## Article

Phocuswright has made it crystal clear in its latest study: **58% of travelers would rather pay more for free cancellation than hunt for the cheapest nonrefundable fare**. Flexibility keeps winning the battle at the checkout.

The finding comes with a second number that should worry more than a few revenue managers. **One in three US travelers feels extremely or very anxious about booking an international trip**, against just 7% in Germany. That anxiety peaks right at payment, and **one in five US travelers has abandoned a booking before typing in a card**. Across all ten markets, a full refund ranks first or ties for first place. Markets split on the formula: the US and Europe lean on free cancellation while China and Malaysia go for cheap refund protection add-ons.

My take is blunt. Keep pushing the nonrefundable rate as a conversion hook and you are fighting the buyer's psychology. You can see it in the [Phocuswright](https://www.phocuswright.com/Travel-Research/Research-Updates/2026/travelers-pay-more-to-cancel-58-choose-free-cancellation-over-a-lower-price?utm_source=rss&#038, utm_medium=rss&#038, utm_campaign=travelers-pay-more-to-cancel-58-choose-free-cancellation-over-a-lower-price) report itself. Flexibility has become a product, not a concession. Whoever packages it with a clear price and a clear policy captures bookings others are letting slip at the payment screen.
