Summary: The cruise line joins the private island club and closes the loop on the custom cruise: ship, stop and onboard spend all under one brand.

## Article

MSC Cruceros is going a step further in the Caribbean and building its own private island for passengers to enjoy. The line is joining a playbook most of its regional rivals already run, where a stop at a company-owned destination has become the norm. According to [Preferente](https://www.preferente.com/noticias-de-agencias-de-viajes/msc-construye-una-isla-en-el-caribe-para-recreo-de-sus-clientes-352267.html), the goal is to keep guests inside MSC's ecosystem even when they step on land.

The logic is sound. **A private island does not compete with the local port, it competes with third-party shore excursions**. You control the experience, the lunch price, the drinks, the sunbed rental and even the photo the passenger takes home. It is pure margin and, on top of that, less friction. In exchange, the destination gets reduced to a set and the economies of traditional ports are left out of the split.

My read: the move is consistent and, to me, it is an opportunity for those who position themselves well. Lines still calling at classic docks can negotiate harder with taxi drivers, operators and local shops, because they no longer go head-to-head. The island beats the ship, but the real port keeps a customer who wants to get out and see something different. There is business there for whoever designs it well.
