Summary: The hotel industry has a problem that is not about standards, it is about execution. Jason Emanis names the Execution Gap and proposes a five-stage operating model to close it.

## Article

Jason Emanis, a hospitality professional, published on October 8 an analysis worth reading slowly. His thesis: hoteliers do not have a standards problem, they have an execution problem. He calls it the **Execution Gap**, the distance between what the manual says and what actually happens on the night shift, in the housekeeping closet, at the front desk at three in the morning. [His article](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-hospitality-standards-management-why-hoteliers-moving-emanis-3ncxc?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios&utm_campaign=share_via&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=what-is-hospitality-standards-management-and-why-hoteliers-are-moving-beyond-static-sops) paints the scene precisely: the property manager downloads the PDF, prints the useful pages, tapes them to the back of house wall, and there they stay. When corporate updates the SOP in the cloud, the sheet taped next to the service elevator is already out of date. The team keeps executing against that piece of paper.

The consequence cuts both ways. Annual brand audits arrive months later and only record past mistakes, they do not guide the current shift. And legacy systems do not fix the real issue: an LMS teaches during onboarding, an inspection checklist records what already failed, but neither governs the operational playbook in real time. That is where the concept Emanis develops comes in: **Hospitality Standards Management** as the operational discipline that turns passive documentation into an active rhythm, with standards that are accessible, role-specific and measurable on shift.

The model he proposes is called the **Consistency Loop**, with five stages:

- **Define**: clear, measurable standards in a centralized system, not scattered files.
- **Distribute**: hand each team member what applies to them, in their language, with visual references.
- **Deliver**: guide daily execution during real service.
- **Diagnose**: capture execution data by shift and department before guest satisfaction drops.
- **Develop**: coach the team with concrete data, not generic annual retraining.

The read for a European hotelier is direct. In markets with high turnover and multilingual staff, such as Spain or Italy, the Execution Gap is not academic, it is what separates an 8.5 from a 9.2 in reviews. The margin sits in the lower layer of the operation: housekeeping, F&B, maintenance. The technology that ties standard and shift into the same flow is the one that will make a difference in 2026, not another layer of reporting.

Three things to watch. First, whether mid-size brands start requiring Standards Management tools from franchisees as part of the contract, which would reshuffle the operational stack in properties of 80 to 200 rooms. Second, what PMS and housekeeping systems do with this layer, whether they integrate it or leave it outside. Third, how ROI is measured: not with quarterly audits, but with shift-level data. That is where the proof will be on whether this closes the gap or just paints over it.
