Summary: Wellness used to mean spa. Now the weights room and functional training are starting to decide bookings, and that changes how you sell your hotel.

## Article

For years, when a hotel said "wellness" it meant spa. Massage, hydrotherapy circuit, robe and slippers. That was the package. According to [this analysis from eHotelier](https://insights.ehotelier.com/insights/2026/09/28/is-fitness-now-a-primary-booking-driver/?utm_source=rss&#038, utm_medium=rss&#038, utm_campaign=is-fitness-now-a-primary-booking-driver), that map is shifting: fitness stops being a filler amenity and starts behaving like a real reason to pick a hotel, especially outside the resort segment.

The logic makes sense. There's a slice of traveller who trains daily and won't trade the workout for being on the road. If your OTA listing only shows a blurry photo of two treadmills and a 4-kilo dumbbell, that guest has already ruled you out before checking the rate. And we're not only talking about luxury city hotels: neighbourhood gyms with guest access, 7:00 functional classes, decent strength equipment. This lands squarely in revenue territory, because these are services you can package and charge for.

My read: fitness is turning into a segmentation tool, not a maintenance cost. If your guest trains, you have a perfect excuse to sell them a package, a private class or a late checkout to shower without rushing. If your guest doesn't train, you have a room taking up square metres that might earn more as coworking or an extended breakfast. The question isn't whether fitness sells, it's whether your gym is telling a story or just gathering dust.
