The hard part is juggling Airbnb, antitrust courts and five simultaneous AI fronts. ## Article Booking Holdings has a problem plenty of people would envy: too many things going on at once. According to [Skift](https://skift.com/2026/09/23/booking-ceo-building-the-ai-travel-agent-isnt-the-hard-part/), the company's CEO admits that building the AI travel agent is not the tricky bit. What's hard is doing it while running **five AI bets in parallel**, fending off pressure from AI upstarts, competing with **Airbnb** and defending itself in antitrust-minded courts. That line should make anyone in travel tech sit up. If code is no longer the bottleneck, the competitive edge moves elsewhere: proprietary data, distribution reach and the ability to plug all of that into the daily operations of a hotel, an airline or an OTA. I'm a bit sceptical of that framing coming from someone at Booking's scale. For 90% of independent hotels and small agencies, the problem is the same as ever: no team, no budget, no time to run five AI fronts. The upside is that the tools Booking builds to defend itself will eventually trickle down to the rest of the industry, through APIs or vendors. That's where the real opportunity sits. ## Sources - Skift: https://skift.com/2026/09/23/booking-ceo-building-the-ai-travel-agent-isnt-the-hard-part/ ## Citation Booking Is Running Five AI Bets at Once and Tech Isn't the Hard Part.
